Te Whatu Ora - Health NZ

Te Whatu Ora is New Zealand’s governing body for the health industry. It manages all health services, including hospital and specialist services, and primary and community care.

I was brought on to help build Hira - a large programme of work to centralise digital health data, so that digital health service providers, health practitioners and the general public have improved access to crucial health information for each and every New Zealander.

As Senior UX/UI Designer my work spread across a number of tasks.

Research and Discovery

In order to understand the needs of those working in digital health, I interviewed a number of professionals from the sector and worked to synthesise insights from these interviews collaboratively in Miro.

From there I worked to develop personas that represented the three distinct groups of users.

Multiple digital personas, each with a photo, name, role, or title, and sections including goals, tasks, needs, frustrations, opportunities, and various assessments.

With an audience comprising health practitioners, established businesses, start-ups and the general public, getting content to work effectively was paramount. Together with our Content Designer I worked on card sorting our content by information type to plan out our existing and upcoming digital products.

Visual Design

The original intention at Te Whatu Ora was to launch a website devoted soley to telling the story of the Hira programme. I set to work on website designs using existing branding and working to the constraints of an ‘out of the box’ Silverstripe content mangement system.

Initial brand colours were conceived for print, so I undertook a digital colour palette that adhered to accessibility standards for contrast.

And developed a Mood board to articulate the design direction.

Hira Marketplace was the first major, public facing deliverable from the Hira programme, and I was the lead designer for the Website.

Visual design was undertaken in Adobe Creative Suite and Figma, UI design in Figma, with website build and CMS work completed in Silverstripe.

Designs were ‘mobile first’ and adhered to accessibility requirements.

Working in Agile

To deliver the Hira Marketplace, I was part of an Agile team working with cross-functional team members within Te Whatu Ora and with external vendors and developers.

I worked with the team in Jira to manage the build, development and site improvements.
